How to Care for Your Candle: Tips for a Longer, Cleaner Burn

There is something truly magical about lighting a handmade candle — the warm glow, the gentle scent filling the room, the moment of calm it creates. To make the most of your HB Royal Retreat candle, a little care goes a long way. Here are our top tips:

1. The First Burn is the Most Important

Always allow your candle to burn long enough for the entire surface to melt into a full melt pool on the first use. This prevents “tunnelling” — where the candle burns straight down the middle, wasting wax on the sides. For most candles, this takes 2–3 hours.

2. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 5 mm. A trimmed wick means a cleaner, steadier flame with less soot and smoke. You can use scissors or a dedicated wick trimmer.

3. Never Burn for More Than 4 Hours at a Time

Burning a candle for too long can cause the wick to “mushroom” and the wax to overheat. We recommend burning your candle for a maximum of 4 hours at a time, then allowing it to cool completely before relighting.

4. Keep the Wax Pool Clean

Remove any wick trimmings, matches, or debris from the wax pool before lighting. These can cause uneven burning or become a fire hazard.

5. Burn in a Safe Environment

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep away from drafts, children, and pets.
  • Place on a heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep away from flammable materials.

6. Know When to Stop

Stop burning your candle when about 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom. Burning below this level can cause the container to overheat.

7. Store Your Candle Properly

Store your candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve the scent and colour. Always replace the lid when not in use.

With a little love and care, your HB Royal Retreat candle will fill your home with warmth and fragrance from the very first to the very last flicker. 🕯️
