If you’ve ever looked at the ingredients of a traditional handmade soap and noticed “sodium hydroxide” — also known as lye — you might have wondered: is this safe? The short answer is yes, absolutely. And here’s why.
What is Lye?
Lye, or sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a naturally derived alkaline compound. It has been used in soap making for thousands of years — long before modern cosmetics existed. Without lye, there is no soap. It’s as simple as that.
The Science of Soap Making: Saponification
When lye is combined with oils or fats, a chemical reaction called saponification takes place. During this process, the lye and oils transform completely into two new substances: soap and glycerin. By the time the soap has fully cured, there is no lye remaining in the finished bar — it has been entirely converted.
This is why properly made traditional soap is completely safe for your skin, even though lye was used in the process.
Why Does Soap Need to Cure?
After soap is made, it needs time to cure — typically 4 to 7 weeks. During this time, the saponification process completes fully, excess water evaporates, and the bar becomes harder and milder. This is why our traditional handmade soaps require longer lead times: we never rush the process. Quality takes time.
Is “Lye-Free” Soap Really Soap?
You may have seen products marketed as “lye-free soap.” In reality, these are usually detergent bars or melt-and-pour bases — not true soap. Real soap, by definition, requires lye. If a product claims to be soap but lye-free, it simply means the lye was used at an earlier stage of production and is not listed as a final ingredient — because it no longer exists in the finished product.
