Walk into any supermarket and you’ll find shelves full of soaps, lotions, and bath products — all at very low prices. But have you ever stopped to wonder what’s actually inside them, and how they’re made? Here’s an honest look at the difference between handmade and mass-produced products — and why it matters.
Ingredients: Quality vs. Quantity
Mass-produced products are formulated to be as cheap as possible to manufacture at scale. This often means synthetic detergents instead of real soap, artificial fragrances, preservatives, fillers, and stabilisers that have little to no benefit for your skin.
Handmade products are crafted in small batches using carefully selected, high-quality ingredients. At HB Royal Retreat, we choose every ingredient intentionally — from the oils we use in our soaps to the fragrance oils in our candles and wax melts. Nothing is added without a purpose.
The Production Process
Mass production relies on industrial machinery, high temperatures, and chemical processes that can strip away the natural goodness of ingredients. Many commercial soaps, for example, have the glycerin removed during production — because glycerin is more valuable as a separate ingredient in other cosmetics. What’s left is a harsh, drying bar.
Handmade production preserves the integrity of the ingredients. Our cold-process soaps retain all of their naturally occurring glycerin, which is deeply moisturising and gentle on the skin. Every bar is made by hand, poured with care, and given the time it needs to cure properly.
Transparency & Trust
Mass-produced brands often use complex ingredient lists full of names that are difficult to pronounce or understand. Marketing claims like “natural” or “organic” are sometimes used loosely, with only a tiny percentage of natural ingredients in the formula.

Environmental Impact
Mass production generates enormous amounts of waste, uses excessive packaging, and often relies on supply chains that span the globe.
Small handmade businesses like ours produce in small batches, reducing waste. We are based in Switzerland and source our ingredients thoughtfully, keeping our footprint as small as possible.
